I am currently in the process of introducing “Clusters” into the game. A cluster is 4 of the same colored blocks in a square (much like the ones in Lumines). I want to try to change things up when it comes to clusters. I want to make YOU in charge of clearing the clusters rather than having the game do it automatically. You even get more points if you do it in time with the music (that is one of the reasons why I was working on that song). The catch is that the clusters can disappear if you don’t “cash in” in time; this will jumble the blocks that were inside the clusters. This could bring about new clusters or completely ruin your plans. The bigger the cluster the more points, but that also means the faster the cluster goes away.

I think it is an interesting “risk and reward” system that helps keep the game interesting and a bit more strategic. I fear with this is that it can get complicated managing time powers and clusters all at once. I guess all I can do now is try it to find out.
